WelesのセンターScott Gibbsがインジャリータイムに見せた見事なトライがEnglandを32-31
と下すドラマティツクな勝利へ導いた。この結果下表のとうり得失点差で
スコットランドは１９９０年以来初の５ケ国対抗優勝をなしとげた。
前半でEnglandがDan Luger,Steve HanlyとRichard Hillのトライでリード、Englandの
１９９０年代４回目のグランドスラム達成を疑う者はいなかったが、Gibbsがこの夢をうち砕いた。
後半の５５分を過ぎてEnglandが３１−２５とリードしていたが、インジャリータイムに入り、
EnglandのTim RoberのWalesのColin Charvisへのタックルがレフリーに危険タックルと
判定されると、Welesはキックで陣地を進め、ライナウトから、前出のScott GibbsがEngland
の密集を突き破り５人のディフェンスをかわす見事なランニングでトライを奪い、Jenkins
のゴールがなり、Wemblyにつめかけたファンの祝福を受けた。
終始ゲームを支配しつずけたEnglandが、この試合初めてみせた、たった１度のディフェンス
の乱れが手中にしたグランドスラムを逃がしっしまった。
EnglandのコーチのCline Woodwordは、”負けたとは信じられない、明日目がさめても信じられないだろう”
と述べていた。

centre Scott Gibbs set up Wales for a dramatic 32-31 victory over England
on Sunday, handing Scotland the Five Nations championship for the first
time since 1990.
Just as England, who scored first-half tries from wingers Dan Luger and
Steve Hanley and flanker Richard Hill, seemed to be heading towards their
fourth grand slam of the 1990s, Gibbs crashed over near the posts after
a powerful, weaving run.
England coach Clive Woodward said:"I still can't believe we lost.
I'll wake up in the morning and I still won't believe it."
